BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

Jack Haire Named Parade CEO

Thursday, April 16, 2009

In a mild surprise, Condé Nast/Advance chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr. went outside his corporate sphere with the April 16 hiring of longtime Time Inc. executive Jack Haire to succeed the retiring Walter Anderson at Parade on July 1.  Haire's 1978-2006 Time Inc. career included 1993-1998 and 1998-2005 stints as Time publisher and Fortune/Money Group president, respectively, and he was Time Inc. executive vp/corporate sales when he left the company in January 2006 following a restructuring by president/ceo Ann Moore.   That was a major surprise (min, December 19, 2005).

Through his Haire Media Ventures consultancy (since 2006), Haire's clients included CNETQuigo Technologies and Hallmark Cards. More to come in the April 20 min.

When's the last time anyone under 80 read Parade? There's just no there there. When my Sunday paper comes, Parade gets immediately filed for recycling along with the used-car ads and advertorial real estate copy.

Ahhh, another broad assumtion based on a survey of one. Hopefully, "Carrespondent" isn't making media buying decisions. For the record: The next decade promises massive growth in the over-50 age group, currently about 35% of the population. They account for 42% of after-tax income, control 77% of the nation's financial holdings, and spend more than 1 trillion on goods and services every year. During these tough economic times, it's inevitable: Marketers will get over their fixation on the youth market and (as the saying goes) follow the money. I'd say this was a very smart move for Mr. Haire.
