Hearst Integrates Photo Sharing Service CountryLiving.com and GoodHousekeeping.com sites. A deal with photo service Smilebox integrates a sophisticated downloadable tool for creating personalized greetings, slideshows, video and scrapbooks. In addition to 900 templates in the Smilebox library, the two companies will collaborate on making new templates from the magazine brands as well as templates on behalf of advertisers. The Hearst properties will create new templates that work with editorial projects in print and online across the two magazine brands. The editorial and sponsored designs will benefit from the social media tools that allow users to share their creations in email, blogs and social networks. Smilebox was founded in 2005 and launched in 2006. To date the service claims to have served 70 million plays of users’ multimedia projects. Smilebox does not come without some hurdles. The system works through special software that must be downloaded and installed. The service tries to upsell the user to a subscription product at log-in and makes a limited number of templates available for free. Nevertheless, the program does create pleasant multimedia scrapbooks from a user’s own photo collection along with zoomable photos and background musical themes. In the software version we downloaded from the CountryLiving.com site, the magazine branding “Brought to you by Country Home” was visible in the software interface and on the preview screens of the nine free templates.
