BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Four Wheeler Turns 50Tuesday, February 7, 2012 A half century ago the general auto consumer had few choices when it came to four-wheel drive rugged vehicles. And so it is not surprising that the first issue of Four Wheeler magazine featured a Jeep descending Colorado’s Black Bear Road. In the fifty years since, the market for sports and outdoor vehicles has expanded considerably, as has the magazine serving the niche. The February 2012 issue looks back over that half century of publishing in a retrospective issue that also celebrates the top trucks of this year. Publisher Source Interlink announced that the birthday edition is available this week. Excerpts from the new issue are available at the FourWheeler.com site. In the first issue, the editors bemoaned the challenges of putting all they know into the confines of print. “The first issue of a magazine is really difficult to put together,” the editors wrote in the February 1962 number. “There are so many things you want to include – and so many more facts about the stories you do include that the whole project is discouraging.” The magazine claims a circulation of 190,000 and a readership of 2.8 million (per its most recent media kit). Its audience skews enormously male – 86%. If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com
