Foreign Affairs Lets Digital Drive SuccessFriday, February 10, 2012 The 90-year-old buttoned down and serious-minded Foreign Affairs journal has sported that signature powder blue cover for decades. But the brand has leveraged a fresh look online to drive cross-platform success. The brand’s vibrant digital feeds of timely news and opinion is helping the print magazine raise its profile. The company reports that at newsstand its January/February number is up 70% compared to same time last year, and that is with a raised cover price. The issue cost was hiked for the special anniversary edition from $9.95 to $12.95.The ForeignAffairs.com Web site has done a laudable job complementing and filling in for a publication that is on a bi-monthly publishing schedule. The site has exclusive content that brings a sense of history and policy depth to the current events that populate the Web’s news ecosystem. The company credits the online component with driving much of the brand’s growth. A special online rate helped increase Web subscriptions to the print product 68% in January. Subscribers get access to premium Web content as well as an deep archive of the Foreign Affairs media going back 90 years. The company says that ad sales are also at a high, with a 100% increase over the January/February issue last year. The brand claims 170,000 readers.
