BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Finally, Color E-Reader Tech Worth Watching As the WSJ video suggests, the color vibrancy of the current display, which does not use backlighting, is more muted than the promotional materials suggest at the mirasol site. Nevertheless, this is the kind of display advance that is necessary to make e-readers more compelling for magazines. The tech blog SlashGear also has a video showing some of the demo units running color video. In addition to adding muted color to the e-reader equation, mirasol technology addresses the screen refresh rate, which is sluggish on current e-ink displays. While the lack of color vibrancy makes this mirasol technology yet another iterative step toward an acceptable solution, it is a larger step than we have seen in the e-readers that seemed to meld together last week into a single, insufficient solution to portable digital reading. ![]() Qualcomm says it will be shipping these displays to manufacturers of e-readers this year.
