Farrell Leaves Men's Journal; Reed leaves O

First-half 2009 closed with the departures of two highly respected magazine executives at titles where they served for less than a year. Last November, Fran Farrell ended a five-year stint as National Geographic Adventure publisher to fill the Men's Journal vacancy created by Will Schenck's elevation to publisher of Wenner Media flagship Rolling Stone.  But working with Jann Wenner has long been difficult, so the New York Post reporting (July 1) that Farrell was being replaced by WM executive director of corporate sales/marketing Matt Mastrangelo (a past MJ associate publisher) was no surprise--and no reflection on Farrell's ability.

Last summer, Susan Reed also ended a five-year stint as editor-in-chief at Golf for Women (subsequently ceased publishing) to succeed the retired Amy Gross at O.  Reasons for Reed's brief O tenure were not disclosed, but it, too, is no reflection on her ability.  In 2003, Reed and GfW first exposed Masters host Augusta National golf club's refusal to allow women members.

Reed's O successor is longtime Time Inc.  executive Susan Casey, who edited SI Women from 2001-2003..
