ExtremeTech: We’re Not Dead Yet!
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Despite widespread reports that Ziff Davis was closing its hard-core tech hardware site ExtremeTech (including a note from editors at the site that suggested as much), company CEO Jason Young tells minonline “there are no plans to shutter or discontinue it.” Over the weekend, Silicon Valley blog ValleyBeat reported that the San Francisco staff had been laid off and the site would go fallow. On the site itself, editors bade farewell, saying that writers Loyd Case, Jason Cross, Joel Durham and three others were leaving the company.

Not so fast, says Young. In fact, ExtremeTech will continue as a brand and as a content hub for hard-core reviews of PC components. Editorial responsibility is simply moving to New York, according to Young. “What is happening is we are closely integrating operation back here in New York with the core PCMag content team, many of whom have been involved as contributors,” he says. PC Magazine was discontinued as a print publication earlier this year and exists digitally as both the PCMag.com Web site and a downloadable digital edition of the magazine.

According to Young, the change is part of a redesign of the PCMag Digital Network, which also includes Gearlog, AppScout and the PCMagCast webcasts. The redesign will appear in the fall and will offer a more seamless integration of the various brands in the network, Young says.

ExtremeTech will continue to focus on components (video cards, motherboards, etc.), and the site will get discrete content of its own. Executive editor Jeremy Kaplan will lead the editorial for the site. Young would not specify the number of layoffs involved in the move, but he says the San Francisco office remains open with sales and editorial staff and that some of the West Coast contributors will continue to have a role in the site.

Young admits that when it comes to ad sales, “it has been a tough year.” He claims that the brands are performing better than industry averages on ads and that direct response and performance programs are getting funded. Company revenue is up in Q1 year-over-year, he says.
