Elsevier Buys Firefighters' Networking Site

FirefighterNation.com, a social networking site for firefighters, was recently acquired by Elsevier Public Safety (EPS), though EPS and Go Forward Media, owner of FirefighterNation.com, have been partners since December 2008.

EPS, publisher of FireRescue, JEMS, Law Officer and Public Safety Communications magazines, acquired the site to make it the online home of FireRescue magazine. The site will include more news, videos and educational content, along with more industry networking features.

Subsequent to the December partnership, Dave Iannone, president and CEO of Go Forward Media, became managing director of eMedia Strategy at EPS, where he manages the vision and growth of the Public Safety brand. In a press statement, Jeff Berend, VP/publisher of Elsevier Public Safety, said, “We are excited with the acquisition and upcoming expansion of FirefighterNation.com. We’ve had tremendous success in providing solid content in print for front-line firefighters and fire officers. Now it’s time to use the backbone of the FirefightersNation.com community to expand how we deliver that critical information online.”

FirefighterNation.com, which launched in 2007, has over 35,000 registered members, and Iannone has been busy driving new initiatives—he launched the first of many webcasts for the FireRescue brand and one for JEMS this week, with over 2,000 registrants combined. The brand has also seen an increase in registrants for its Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn groups over the last two weeks. In the coming weeks and months EPS plans to include more integrated content and advertising opportunities across the public safety brand.
