'Discover' Sold to Kalmbach PublishingThursday, August 5, 2010 Discover, the science magazine launched by Time Inc. in 1980, was acquired today (Aug. 5) by Waukesha, Wis.-based Kalmbach Publishing Co. Price was not disclosed. ![]() The seller was Discover Media LLC, a consortium originally led by Bob Guccione Jr. when the magazine was bought from Disney Publishing in Sept. 2006. Guccione left a year later, with Henry Donahue taking charge as publisher/CEO. Donahue will leave following the transition. But other key staff members, led by editor-in-chief Corey Powell, will stay. They will report to Kalmbach VP/editorial Kevin Keefe, and the Discover editorial/business offices will remain in New York. Kalmbach's 16 enthusiast properties include Astronomy, which is seen as the most complementary to Discover. Noted Discover alumni include 1980s publisher Reg Brack Jr. (later Time Inc. president) and 1990s publisher Michael Rooney (now Wall Street Journal chief revenue officer).
