Monday, January 30, 2012
Tracking the most heavy trafficked magazine Web sites in November was a no brainer, food takes the lead. One online habit that has not diminished over the years is the Thanksgiving and Christmas rush towards shopping and recipes. All of the usual suspects got their annual burst of activity in November 2011 as the hint for just the right gravy concoction and stuffing ingredients commenced.
Relatively young compared with many of the long-standing foodie destinations, Time Inc. Lifestyle Group’s five-year-old MyRecipes.com collects recipes from the group's line of magazine sites and adds its own content. November’s +22.48% page views and +26.63% unique visitors (versus October 2011) was part of a fourth-quarter drive that saw 62% year-over-year growth. It added a Five & Dine video series, launched an iPad app and introduced a tool for finding deals at local grocery stores
Also setting new records was FineCooking.com (+26.70%, +47.03% UVs). The site reports that November was just the ramp up to an even bigger December. Throughout the holiday season, it was seeing strength in its videos and was also seeing traffic come in from its new iPad MenuMaker app. Sponsored by McCormick Gourmet Select, the app creates customized menus and cooking schedules. It has thus far been downloaded 42,000 times and enjoys an unusually high 4.5 star rating from users in the Apple App Store.
Foodandwine.com increased 394,000 unique visitors in November based on its “relentless attention to Thanksgiving based SEO efforts,” says American Express Publishing VP of digital strategy Philip Whitney. Increased traffic also had to do with their newsletter, the Dish, which doubled in size over the summer and increased referrals from a 200,000 fan base on Facebook.
