Cycle News Ceases Publication
Friday, September 3, 2010

The weekly source of news, profiles and reviews around the competitive motorcycle racing field, Cycle News, has ceased publishing with this week’s issue, a company source confirmed to minonline. According to reports, its editor-in-chief of 25 years, Paul Carruthers, had been laid off recently and the staff was informed of the closure this week. At his blog in late August, Carruthers posted a lengthy piece anticipating his imminent firing.

At its site, the weekly has not posted public mention of the closure and is still advertising subscriptions. Cycle News was available in a print edition for $49.95 a year and an online digital version with access to premium site content for $19.95 a year. The Costa Mesa California-based company could not say whether the brand would continue as an online news source. When minonline contacted the company, a source confirmed the closure and simply said, “We’re not sure what is happening.”

This is a shame C/N has been the heart beat of the M/C industry. I believe that the sales of M/C's will fall due to not having a industry cheer leader like they have been___GB

I weep for the future of moto-journalism. When a top quality publication like CN cannot keep, let alone increase, its subscribers for only $50 a year, I see no hope for anyone else. I lost my job and I cut every expense except food, rent and my CN subscription. I even turned off cable because I was getting all my motorcycle racing news from CN. That's how much I believed and treasured CN. Goodbye CN. I will miss your top notch coverage of all things motorcycles.

Now, last week's ed. (the last?) was a little different, in that they had no last-page editorial or "the archives" about a famous racer or other personage from back in the day.
And being "the bible" of motorcycle racing, you'd think they'd have on-going ad revenue at least from Japan, inc. Man, just when you think things are beginning to turn the corner, something like this happens. My condolences to all CN employees, and I hope they get paid for 2 months per the "60-days closure notice" rule.
