BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Cosmo Looks For User-Generated Karma Estée Lauder have launched a branded social media project around Breast Cancer Awareness Month that asks for people to post about their good acts. The Cosmo Karma Project exists as a series of social media apps, including a Facebook app and a Twitter feed.Members enter the small daily kindnesses they perform to get Karma points and compete on a leaderboard. Users can enter a contest to win a spa trip, but Cosmo Karma says its real goal is to amass over 30,000 kind actions by January 31st. "The Cosmo Karma Project is designed to harness the amazing drive and energy of the more than 18 million fun fearless females who read our magazine, and channel their do-good instincts every day in a way that can really make a difference," says Donna Kalajian Lagani, svp, publishing director, Cosmopolitan. One of the challenges for magazine brands in the new social media world is finding ways to channel user-generated content into richer editorial frames. The Cosmo Karma project seems to lean in the right direction by crafting a worthwhile karmic goal around user participation. The app outlines other ways women can raise awareness and contribute to breast cancer prevention and cures. It would be interesting to see if this crowdsourcing of karmic content could also be aggregated and re-used in creative ways or packaged into new editorial for the Cosmo site.
