Cathie Black Quits Hearst to Become NYC Schools ChancellorTuesday, November 9, 2010 Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines for nearly 15 years before becoming chairman with David Carey's hire in June, was appointed New York City schools chancellor by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Black is succeeding Joel Klein, who ended an eight-year term to join News Corp. in a yet-to-be-specified capacity.Hearst Corp. CEO Frank A. Bennack, who hired Black from the Newspaper Association of America presidency in November 1995, said that he accepted Black's decision with "both a sense of considerable loss and a feeling of pride in her readiness to undertake [a] vital public service....Cathie, therefore, goes with my blessing." Black had a very successful run at Hearst Magazines. Successful launches of O (2000) and Food Network (2009) are among her many legacies. Along with the NAA (1991-1995), Black is also the past USA Today president/publisher (1983-1991) and New York magazine publisher (1979-1983).
