Catherine Mayer Promoted to Time Magazine Europe EditorFriday, February 3, 2012 On Feb. 2, Time managing editor (since June 2006) Rick Stengel announced the promotion of London bureau chief (also since 2006) Catherine Mayer to Europe editor. She continues to be London-based and is reporting to Time International editor Jim Frederick, who added executive editor with his promotion from Time.com editor in Sept. 2011.Stengel praised Mayer for possessing "a distinctive voice...one I did not want to lose....She will continue to write on British politics, society and culture as well as broader takes on the European zeitgeist as often as her new duties will allow." The Appleton, Wis.-born Mayer is fluent in German, as 11 years at the newsweekly Focus can attest, and at Time, she received the Foreign Press Association's 2010 Story of the Year award for her profile of British prime minister David Cameron. This Stengel-described "rock-and-roll wife" (Mayer's husband is Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill) becomes the fifth major Time editorial promotion since last summer. She joins Frederick, deputy managing editor Nancy Gibbs, executive editor Michael Duffy and Time.com managing editor Catherine Sharick.
