Carey Named Hearst Magazines PresidentMonday, June 28, 2010 David Carey has joined Hearst Magazines as president, Hearst announced this morning. He's leaving his post as Condé Nast group president. Carey succeeds Cathie Black, who is ending a nearly 15-year tenure to become chairman of the unit. Hearst Corp. vice-chairman/CEO Frank A. Bennack Jr., who had hired Black from the Newspaper Assocation of America in November 2005, did the same in recruiting Carey from Condé Nast.Carey's executive career began at Hearst, where he was SmartMoney founding publisher in 1991. (SM is now wholly owned by Dow Jones & Co.) He left for CN in mid-1995 to relaunch House & Garden (folded in 2007). His most successful stint was as The New Yorker VP/publisher from 1998-2005, when the weekly became profitable for the first time under CN ownership (since 1985). He subsequently was founder/president of Condé Nast Portfolio (2007-2009), which was a casualty of the poor economy. In his most recent capacity, Carey oversaw Wired and Golf Digest along with other corporate responsiblities. Concurrently, Hearst Magazines executive VP/publishing director/chief marketing officer (since October 1997) Michael Clinton was elevated to divisional president, with the same responsibilities. All publishers report to him. Carey was inducted into min's Sales Executive Hall of Fame on June 14. He joined, among others, 2009 inductee Clinton.
