BlackBerry App Development on the AscendantWednesday, August 25, 2010 While Apple’s iOS and now Google’s Android are the mobile platforms most developers are chasing these days, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry is far from out of the running. An interesting tidbit in a recent report from mobile ad network Millennial Media suggests that both users and developers are looking to this smartphone. In its report on July traffic across its mobile ad network, Millennial reported that the BlackBerry Curve was second only to the iPhone itself as the most popular mobile phone being served ads either through the mobile Web or apps. While the iPhone had 24.32% of the market, the curve had 6.71%, still far ahead of the Motorola Droid (4.9%) running on Android. In fact, four of the top 20 phones run on the RIM OS. Altogether, RIM represents a 16% share of all impressions served on Millennial, one of the largest mobile ad networks in the world. Android has just vaulted ahead of RIM, however, and now represents 19% of the traffic. When it comes to developers, RIM actually is the fastest-growing segment. While the company has been slow in cultivating its own App Store, the expected arrival of the BlackBerry 6 version of the OS is expected to increase interest. Among the mobile developers working across platforms, 49% are developing for BlackBerry, while 100% are using iOS and 75% are on Android. “We anticipate the RIM percentage to increase with the launch of their app program and newly released devices,” says Millennial in the report. Our feeling is that there will be no clear winner in the mobile operating system race, largely because the platforms are starting to look more and more alike. As the apps across Apple, Android, BlackBerry and maybe Windows Phone 7 seem to look and act similarly, consumers will be less focused on the latest, coolest phones and companies. For business publishers especially, BlackBerry will remain a big opportunity worth targeting with app development. With only 23-25% of the population in the U.S. owning smartphones (the largest share still being BlackBerry), there will be a huge market for these contenders to share.
