BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Au Revoir for Hachette in the U.S.? (since November 1995) Cathie Black over licensing Elle to Hearst increases speculation that Hachette's 25-year U.S. presence is coming to an end. Hachette's French parent company, Lagardère Active, released a statement this morning saying "there are no ongoing talks on a joint venture or licensing agreement with Hearst Corp. Group regarding Elle magazine in the U.S." The 1984 launch of the U.S. Elle (38 years after its post-World War II start in Paris) brought Lagardère Active to the States, and it is inconceivable that Hachette would remain here without its raison d'être. Company's biggest properties, after Elle, are Woman's Day/Car and Driver/Road & Track (all acquired in 1988). This spring, Lemarchand sold Hachette's five enthusiast magazines (Boating/Flying/Popular Photography, etc.) to Bonnier Corp. Also, an Elle/Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine alliance at Hearst would be formidable against Vogue/W at Condé Nast.
