Android Tablets Poised to Capture 15.2% of Market in 2011Thursday, November 18, 2010 The launch of the Samsung Galaxy tablet this month marks one of the first serious Apple iPad competitors in the nascent tablet market, but IMS research says that it is only the beginning. Most of the first wave of iPad alternatives will use the open source Google Android operating system. By mid-2011, the tech researcher says, expect a torrent of Android tablets from 15 major suppliers, including Cisco, Dell, Acer, Motorola and Viewsonic. IMS predicts that the explosion of choice and price points in the market will help Android-based tablets capture 15.2% of the market in 2011 and 28.4% by 2015.Meanwhile, both HP and RIM/Blackberry will enter the market with tablets running proprietary operating systems: the webOS platform HP obtained when it acquired Palm, and the QNX-based OS that RIM is developing. IMS predicts that in 2011 only 7.8% of tablets will be running operating systems other than Apple’s iOS, Android or Windows. This alternative segment is expected to grow to 19.3% of shipments in 2015. Publishers will be challenged next year to keep up not only with the multiple tablet operating systems but also the form factors involved. Many of the iPad rivals will be using smaller screen sizes, which can change the nature of the reading and browsing experience considerably, we found. Look for the Nov. 22 min, where we offer our first impressions of the Android-powered Galaxy Tab unit from Sprint. As we discuss at length, what the open OS Google is offering hardware manufacturers may open the market to greater device variety and pricing. That also means we will see different iterations of the OS as well as unpredictable screen sizes. Our quick take is that size really does matter. The experiential difference between a 10-inch iPad and a 7-inch Galaxy is noticeable in a number of ways – immersion being only the most apparent.
