Adbusters-Organized Protest Occupies Wall Street

Monday, September 19, 2011

It wasn’t quite the turnout Adbusters magazine originally had expected, but the counter-cultural activist magazine helped organize a march on Wall Street on Saturday Sept. 17. Dubbed “Occupy Wall Street” by the magazine, the effort to assemble people via mobile phones, Tweets and web site notifications had hoped to organize thousands to join the protests. Press reports indicated that the crowd ended up in the hundreds, although considerable media coverage occurred over the weekend.

Ostensibly protesting what it characterizes as the excesses and aggrandized power of modern capitalism, the protest attempted to crowd source its one true mission. In a general statement the effort claimed to be defending freedom against aggregated power and corporate control. The group had a stated goal of assembling 20,000 people “to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months.”

The effort was modeled after the Mideast “Arab Spring” uprisings. The bull statue at Wall Street was to be the meeting point where the protesters would discuss and determine their one true demand. Police barricaded the statue, however. Citing the lack of permits to assemble among the protesters.

Adbusters editor-in-chief Kalle Lasn was quoted by CNNMoney saying, “We need to shake up the corporate-driven capitalist system we’re in. To do that we need something radical.”

Weekend requests for comment from Adbusters on the effectiveness or success of the protest were not answered as we went to press. The magazine claims a worldwide circulation of over 100,000.

By Monday (Sept. 19) morning, AdBusters.com had posted a video compilation of the Saturday event. See below.

I support the 9/17 "Occupy Wall Street" event and the 10/6 "Stop the Machine" event. I recognize that in so doing I am allying myself with people who do not share all of my political beliefs, that I will be standing side-by-side in protest with those of the Far Left - including Communists, Socialists and Anarchists - as well as those of the Far Right - including Libertarians, Tea Partyists and Ron Paulists. But politics makes for strange bedfellows, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. My pledge: http://ironboltbruce.com

This whole thing was ridiculous. It was unorganized and chaotic. As a resident of NYC's financial district (who does not work in the finance industry), all this accomplished was to hugely inconvenience the area's residents, and prevent tourism. Local businesses shut down for the weekend -- I'm not talking about Wall Street luncheonettes and power restaurants (those are always closed on weekends). I mean small delis, grocers and even the 24-hour Duane Reade which serves the locals. Although I'm sympathetic to the stated cause, the method of calling attention to it was naive, annoying and ineffective.

the far far right are calling occupywall street a communist/acorn/soros supported event. A right winger just came on my local radio station, claiming he works there and all he sees are hammer and sickle signs. These are the lies the far right are putting out regardless of the facts. Claiming this is nothing but an unorganized bunch of anarchists and communists have been given their talking points to try to destroy the momentum. The fact that the story has now gone mainstream (lawrence on MSNBC) last night, The Ed show, Keith Olberman, Democracy now...the corporate media has received so many calls and emails they had no choice but to cover the event after 10 days. stay strong and stay in it...we can win it.
