Mochila Secures Funding, IDG and Jon Miller
Monday, February 2, 2009

It is quite a day for Mochila, the content syndication platform that partners with numerous magazine brands. Its flurry of announcements point to growth in the content redistribution model. The company closed a Series C round of funding, made a deal to syndicate IDG content into newspaper properties, and added former AOL CEO Jonathan Miller to its advisory board.

The funding round was led by Greenspun Corp., which is also invested in Niche Media LLC and Tribune Corp. Mochila did not disclose the amount of this round but claims to have collected $30 million in investment so far. Mochila offers a content marketplace and syncication platform for redistributing branded media from clients like Hachette Filipacchi, Hearst, Rodale, CNet and The Knot among many others. Mochila recently architected the GlobalPost.com news Web site, which also offers exposure and syndication opportunities for its partners.

Mochila also is partnering with IDG to package content into a personal tech news section it is distributing to 44 sites, including newspaper brands Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune as well as Media General newspaper and TV sites. IDG will be bundling select articles from PC World, Macworld, Computerworld and GamePro magazines.

Rounding out its announcements, Mochila adds Jonathan Miller to its advisory board. Miller served as chairman and CEO of AOL between 2002 and 2006. Miller was responsible for restructuring AOL from its former model (before the Time Warner deal) as a subscriber ISP, to a content and ad-driven model. During Miller’s tenure, AOL purchased Advertising.com, widely considered its wisest acquisition and the foundation for the largest display ad platform online.
