Playboy 'Returns Its Editorial Staff to Chicago

Playboy magazine has always been a Chicago institution under 1953 founder Hugh Hefner (even though he moved to Los Angeles nearly 40 years ago), but editorial shifted to New York in 2002 after the retirement of editorial director (since 1966) Arthur Kretchmer. Now, it is back on Lake Shore Drive, after the announced consolidation of Playboy's editorial and digital departments to ease the financial crunch. Result is that Playboy senior vp/digital content Jimmy Jellinek (ex-Maxim/Stuff editor-in-chief) adds editorial director and is based at the corporate headquarters on Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago Tribune reports (January 23) that an unspecified "small number" of editorial positions will relocate to Chicago; publisher (since January 2006) Lou Mohn remains in New York. Ditto Jellinek predecessor (since April 2004) Chris Napolitano, who becomes editor-at-large after turning down soon-to-retire Playboy Enterprises ceo Christie Hefner's offer to switch cities because of family reasons.
