Teen Mag Folds...Into an Annual

Hearst confirms to min this evening that one of the last standing teen girl books, Teen Magazine, will end its already-diminished quarterly schedule. While not folding entirely, the title will remain as an annual. A Hearst spokesperson says, "Teen was a newsstand-only quarterly with a very small staff, acquired by Hearst along with Seventeen in 2003. We will continue to publish the annual Teen Prom issue but will focus our teen publishing efforts on the Seventeen brand."

Teen's retreat follows the demise of ElleGirl, CosmoGirl, and Teen People. Many of these brands have moved exclusively online as have many of their readers. The once-hot teen girl category is one of the earliest, most obivous casualties of the digital revolution. More teens spend more time online than just about any demo in the mediasphere. And yet classic brands from print generally have failed to lure these eyeballs from endemic Web haunts like social networks.
