It's good to see that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has a sense of humor; she'd pretty much have to in order to make it through the past few weeks of Wall Street madness. But all joking aside, Pelosi's opening remarks at the AMC in San Fransisco last night (Sunday, Oct. 5) were filled with class, charisma and concern. She welcomed attendees to "her city" by pointing out its various charms and surprised a few by professing her deep love for magazines, her desire to get the shield law passed as well as the bit of trivia that her daughter worked for Gourmet.

But the pleasantries quickly turned to realities as audience members asked and Ms. Pelosi described, at great length, what the bailout will mean to the rest of us. "What I want to know is how they all made so much money on Wall Street if they didn't see this tsunami coming?"

The details of the deal are better described elsewhere, but Ms. Pelosi assured magazine executives and investors that the deal will ultimatley grow the economy and that things can only get better from here. Ms. Pelosi's words set a good tone for a conference that is meant to acknowledge change and encourage innovation.
