Latest executive shuffle at Rolling Stone came this morning (August 27) with Ray Chelstowski ending a one-year publisher's stint. Men's Journal publisher (since November 2005) Will Schenck was RS founder (October 1967)/Wenner Media chairman Jann Wenner's choice to succeed. Job security at RS is fragile, with Steve DeLuca (now Details publisher), Tim Castelli (now Google New York sales director), and Chelstowski serving since Rob Gregory (now-Plum TV president/network sales) left for Maxim in January 2004.

Schenck has had a very successful ad-page run at MJ, with January-through-September's +11% differential preceded by 2007's +16% and 2006's +5%. Contributing  factor is his Dare Your Rep campaign, where the MJ sales staff has done outlandish stunts to get attention--including dining on tarantulas (he's holding one in the picture to the right), and dying his hair white after an ad goal was reached. He'll need some magic at RS where the January-through-August differential is -20%.

Schenck tells min that he is "overjoyed" about the opportunity. "The power of the Rolling Stone name is phenomenal. It is exciting to have the chance to add my chapter to it." He hopes that one of his lieutenants gets the MJ job (associate publisher is Jeremy Levine), "but it is Jann's call."
