Meredith Corp. set off some post-July 4 fireworks with the surprise July 8 resignation of Ladies' Home Journal editor-in-chief (since July 2002) Diane Salvatore, with Parents editor-in-chief (since October 1998) Sally Lee succeeding her and adding the New York editorial director title. Concurrently, Better Homes & Gardens editor-in-chief (since July 2006) Gayle Butler adds the title of Des Moines editorial director, with both women sharing the corporate responsibilities held by Mike Lafavore until he left this spring to resume his consultancy.

Salvatore was highly regarded and executed a major redesign (logo change, etc.) in March 2003 and a minor one this past February. But she will not be part of the Meredith of the future, with its greater emphasis on online and, on the business side, on corporate sales and integrated marketing (restructuring there was announced on April 30). Ironically, a decade ago Salvatore succeeded Lee as editor-in-chief of Gruner + Jahr's since-closed YM.
