BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Sporting News Goes Biweekly (Print) & Daily (Digital) nounced February 2007) and U.S. News & World Report (announced in the June 9 Ad Age; effective January 2009). Like TNR, the revamped SN will use improved paper stock (also a +25% trim size) and, like USN&WR, the reduced frequency will make it more analytical than newsy.Sporting News Today will fill the "newsy" void. Plenty of commentators from media and sports (includes The Washington Post's John Feinstein, The Boys of Summer author Roger Kahn, and football Hall of Famers Troy Aikman/John Elway), and plenty of data. We would presume that baseball boxscores, which were an SN staple for about a century, would make a comeback digitally. SN Today will be available free on sportingnewstoday.com. SN was also a St. Louis staple for about a century, when it was owned by descendants of the founding Spink family. In 2006, the Newhouse-family owned American City Business Journals bought it from Paul Allen (Bill Gates' 1975 Microsoft co-founder), and while there remains a presence in St. Louis, newly hired SN/SN Today editor-in-chief Jeff D'Alessio works out of ACBJ's Charlotte, N.C., headquarters.
