The Oakland, CA based independent publication Colorlines won big at the UTNE Independent Press Awards last night, taking home the award for general excellence. Now in its ninth year of publication, ColorLines is a multi-racial magazine devoted to the creativity and complexity of communities of color.

This year marks the first time in the 19-year history of the awards that it was an integrated part of the MPA-IMAG Conference program, which is being held today and tomorrow in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, IL.  During the opening night dinner, Minneapolis-based UTNE Reader Editor-in-chief David Schimke and IMAG Board Chairman Bryan Welch, Publisher and Editorial Director Odgen Publications, recognized this year's winners, chosen from 111 nominees in 15 categories of excellence.

Check out UTNE’s site for the complete list of winners (to be posted shortly).
