Chris Mitchell moves intra-Condé Nast from Details vp/publisher (since April 2004) to fill the Wired publisher vacancy created by Jay Lauf's becoming The Atlantic publisher. No surprise, because Mitchell is a protégé of CN publishing director David Carey, having been Carey's 2001-2004 associate publisher at The New Yorker. "Those were our 'step-up years to profitability," says Carey. "Chris' contribution to our success was vital."

Making Carey's call even easier amidst "the many people who raised their hands quickly for this job" is Mitchell's "intuitive understanding of the Wired brand" in being the monthly's 1996-2000 ad director. "Chris is a highly creative publisher, and very good guy to boot."

Under Mitchell, Details advertising increased 18% from 2004 through 2007, and the men's-magazine's April 2008 issue set a record for the month with 144.32 ad pages.
