BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

UBM Drops CMP Name, Structures Four Independent Businesses
Friday, February 29, 2008

United Business Media will not be hiring a replacement for CMP Technology CEO Steve Weitzner, who vacated that position last November. In fact, CMP as a known corporate entity has ceased to exist, parent UBM announced today. The four divisions that comprised CMP are now individual businesses with their own CEOs and boards of directors. The four CEOs will report directly to David Levin, CEO of UBM.

TechWeb, formerly CMP’s Business Technology Group, will be led by CEO Tony Uphoff; Everything Channel, formerly CMP Channel, by CEO Robert Faletra; TechInsights, formerly CMP’s Electronics Group, by CEO Paul Miller; and Think Services, formerly CMP’s Game, Dr. Dobb’s and International Customer Management Group, by CEO Philip Chapnick. Each CEO had been president of his respective group.

“Instead of dealing with a slightly artificial in-between layer, we can now interface directly with the four CEOs,” says Levin. “[This reflects] the evolution of a very clear strategy around integration. In order to prosper in these specialized markets, one needs to be able to offer the audiences of the customers totally integrated packages of products incorporating everything from data services through events, and, of course, still including print. Having a centralized operation for different communities was inherently going to slow those [four groups of businesses] down.”
