BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
59 Days, 2 Million iPads, and Digi-Mags Keep ComingTuesday, June 1, 2010 After a weekend rush of iPad sales overseas, Apple announced this week that iPad sales had exceeded two million units in the two months the device has been available. Shipments began last week to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. to long lines. Apple continues struggling to keep up with demand, as most analysts report few to no iPads available in U.S. Apple stores. The company is planning to roll out in nine more countries in July. Publishers have been keeping a close eye on iPad sales in order to determine whether the platform will prove to be a more hospitable environment for direct-to-consumer content sales than has the Web. Even the most optimistic analyst projections expected iPad sales of 5 million units or so this year, but the current pace is well ahead of those estimates. RBC Capital is now predicting Apple will sell over 8 million iPad units worldwide this year. By our count of apps listed in the iTunes store, there are over 8,000 programs available for the iPad. While consumers of the early iPad magazine apps from Wired, Time and Popular Science complain that per-issue pricing of these enhanced versions is too expensive, publishers seem determined to maintain the premium pricing on iPad wares. A week after its release, the Wired app remains near the top of the paid app bestseller list in the itunes App Store. On the advertising side, marketers appear willing to buy into expensive placements as well. According to Media: Asia-Pacific, the UK iPad launch will be accompanied by a paid version of The Times of London that includes ads from Unilever, Toyota and Fidelity Investments, who are reported to be paying $200,000 for a single page. Newsweek has launched its iPad version (pictured above) this week, as has Interview magazine. According to reports, Sports Illustrated, New Yorker and Esquire are expected to follow suit shortly.
