Departing Condé Nast Execs Fox/Golinkin/Churgin Leave Huge Legacies
1. Mitch Fox. He is credited for building Details in the early 1990s after it switched from a women's to a men's magazine. Then, as Vanity Fair publisher from 1994-1999, Fox gave it the business credibility that complemented the work of editor-in-chief (since August 1992) Graydon Carter. Pre-Fox, there were rumors that CN chairman (since 1959) S.I. Newhouse, Jr., and the late president/CEO Steve Florio would fold the magazine. Then, after Newhouse purchased the Golf Digest Cos. from The New York Times Co. in early 2001, it was Fox, who as president, made the business formidable with the golf schools, the expansion of the weekly Golf World, the 2001 purchase of Golf for Women from Meredith Corp., and the strengthening of the Golf Digest flagship under publishers Steven Binder (now at ESPN) and Tom Bair. Fox was group president and publishing director of the Golf Digest Group, Fairchild Fashion Group , and Condé Nast Bridal Media Group since September 2005. 2. Sandy Golinkin. The protégée of Tom Ryder at American Express Publishing Co. (she was publisher of Departures and Travel + Leisure in the late-1980s/early-1990s) joined CN as Allure publisher in 1993. After leaving the company in 1998, she returned in 2000 with Condé Nast Sports for Women. Its folding led Golinkin to VP/publisher of the Lucky launch that June, and, with founding editor-in-chief Kim France, its circulation and ad pages rose steadily. In 2007, Lucky carried 1,910 ad pages, just below the 2,000 ad-page threshold where Golinkin told min (August 4, 2003), she would celebrate by being shot out of cannon. We shall see if successor Gina Sanders (ex-Teen Vogue VP/publisher) gets that opportunity in 2008. 3. Amy Churgin. The 1994-1999 New York magazine publisher had a successful November 1999-February 2007 stint as Architectural Digest VP/publisher. (Ad pages averaged about 1,700.) After serving briefly as Gourmet publisher last winter, Churgin succeeded now-Reader's Digest Association Food & Entertaining Group president Suzanne Grimes as Condé Nast Media Group senior VP. That job--top lieutenant to CN Media Group president Richard Beckman--goes to The New Yorker VP/publisher (since September 2005) Lou Cona. Promoted-in-July 2006 Wired publishing director Drew Schutte switches to TNY as VP/publishing director. If you have any breaking news please contact Amy Novak at anovak@accessintel.com |
