Greg Farrar Named President of Nielsen Business Media
Friday, November 16, 2007

The news is that Greg Farrar was named president of Nielsen Business Media today. Nielsen has been without an official headman since CEO Bob Krakoff died suddenly of a heart attack in late March.

Greg Farrar actually took the helm of Nielsen Business Media as COO in the aftermath of Krakoff’s death. There were initial questions raised by industry observers about Farrar’s being in line for the job, but the talk died down quickly. The company has been tight-lipped about the search (and much else), and has gone through communications professionals and firms pretty quickly, jettisoning The Rosen Group earlier this year, and retaining—to the best of our knowledge—Dan Klores to hand The Hollywood Reporter and other duties.

Have they found their man? It might be worth noting that Farrar’s appointment was announced the Friday before Thanksgiving week, probably one of the top ten days in the year to try to bury news. In addition, Farrar has not been named CEO, but president. Still, Farrar is now top man at the company and will be reporting, as before, to David Calhoun, CEO of The Nielsen Company. Farrar is a Nielsen lifer so far, having spent 20 years with the company (from 26 to the tender age of 46). So, if nothing has changed, really, what does this move mean?

Despite being announced late in a sleepy day, this seems to be a vote of confidence for Farrar, who has in fact been leading the company since the Spring. The Friday announcement might have something to do with Farrar being named president and not CEO.
Is the search for a CEO, someone senior to Farrar, still on? We’ll be watching.
