min magazine Toasts 21 Most Intriguing People in Publishing (and more) at Tavern on the Green
For industry doomsdayers who have been sounding a dirge for print, there weren’t too many who shared that opinion at this year’s min magazine awards luncheon as evidenced by its enthusiastic reception and turnout (nearly 300 attendees). Held at the New York City landmark restaurant Tavern on the Green, located in the heart of Central Park, the gala honored the glitterati of the magazine world, while paying special heed to the year’s hottest launches and digital media heroes. Co-hosted by editors Jeremy Greenfield and Courtney Barnes, the event got off to a brisk start following brief introductory remarks by min’s editor-in-chief, Steve Cohn, who is celebrating his 21st year in this post. Big winners of the event included Condé Nast Portfolio, which earned a laurel for Top Hottest Launch; its publisher David Carey and editor-in-chief Joanne Lipman also took home trophies for min’s Top 21 for the year. Accepting the honor, Carey elicited chuckles from the audience when he noted, “We all know that publishing is a contact sport from time to time.” Laurel Touby, who founded mediabistro.com and presided over its recent jaw-dropping $23 million acquisition by Jupitermedia, also revved up the crowd by admitting that one of the big reasons why she started her company was not only to network with other editor/writers but also “to meet guys.” She also coyly stated she had an announcement to make: she would soon be launching a competitive publication to Garden & Gun, one of the luncheon’s honorees under the Hottest Launch category. The name? Guns & Roses, taking its name from the popular heavy metal rock band of the early 1990s. Yes, she was kidding. Cliff Sloan, honored for his work as publisher of Slate.com, recalled with a barely disguised wince how someone from the U.S. Justice Department suggested years ago that he enter tax law full time. Still an attorney, Sloan emphatically stated he was happy not to have gone down that route and relieved he followed friend and fellow honoree David Carey’s advice about “how important it is for the future of journalism that quality publications be successful business propositions…” Similarly, Atoosa Rubenstein, erstwhile editor-in-chief of Seventeen Magazine, now guiding muse of Big Momma Productions, also expressed horror when remembering the well-meaning prognostication—or rather blinding hope—of Hearst publisher Cathie Black who once told her: “I see you as the next Helen Gurley Brown of CosmoGIRL Magazine.” Not wishing to spend 30 years in her position, which is approximately how long Brown spent as editor of Cosmo, Rubenstein bolted for newer ventures or as she said, quoting Patrick Swayze’s swaggering character Johnny from the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing”: “No one puts Baby in a corner.” The event, however, wasn’t a complete valentine to print; digital people had their day in the sun as 11 industry leaders, ranging from Wenda Harris Millard of Martha Stewart Omnimedia, Inc and Rafat Ali of paidContent.org to Robin Wolaner of TeeBeeDee and Brian Quinn of the Wall Street Journal Digital Network, were named on this year’s Digital Hot List.
