The tradition begun by Time founder Henry Luce's 1927 selection of Charles Lindbergh will continue with managing editor Rick Stengel's selection on December 21 (December 31 Time cover). Stengel got the ball rolling at a Time & Life Building luncheon Thursday (November 8) by asking five luminaries for their favorites. Here they are:

1. Al Gore -- from Chris DeWolfe (myspace.com co-founder/CEO)
2. Mother Earth -- from Brian Williams (NBC Nightly News anchor/managing editor)
3. Green -- from Whoppi Goldberg (The View co-host)
4. Gen. David Petraeus -- from George Allen (ex-Virginia governor and U.S. senator)
5. Nikolas Sarkozy -- from Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Somali-born human-rights activist)

They will be among the 33 "nominees" to succeed Stengel's 2006 choice of "you" on min's December 10 ballot, which continues a tradition of ours that began in 1990. Winners will receive a museum-quality print of their favorite Time cover.  Check back at minonline on December 3rd to enter our contest.

Ps - Stengel promised at the luncheon that the selection will "not be a pronoun."
