BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
House & Garden Ceases Publication News last Monday (November 5th) from Condé Nast president Chuck Townsend was not a surprise because he had not named a successor to vp/publisher (since August 2004) Joe Lagani, who resigned October 17 to join glam.com. A magazine that Condé Nast himself launched in 1901 (only Hearst Magazines' 1896 launch House Beautiful has more seniority), House & Garden was the company's sole shelter magazine until the January 1993 purchase of Architectural Digest. That led to H&G's first folding, but then-CN president Steve Florio relaunched it in October 1996 with much fanfare under publisher David Carey (now at Condé Nast Portfolio) and editor-in-chief Dominique Browning, who served the entire "second run." H&G was also Anna Wintour's first U.S. editor-in-chief's position in 1987-1988, before CN chairman S.I. Newhouse, Jr., moved her to Vogue. Other notable alumnae include 1988-1993 editor-in-chief Nancy Novogrod (now Travel + Leisure editor-in-chief) and 1998-2003 publisher Brenda Saget (now-More publisher). Final H&G issue is December. Remaining CN shelter magazines are AD and 2005 launch Domino. If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com |
