Sid Evans Moves from Field & Stream to ‘Hot Launch’ Garden & Gun
Sid Evans, Field & Stream EIC since 2002, has been named editor of recent startup and min magazine 2007 Hot Launch Garden & Gun. Prior to F&S, Evans was editor of Men’s Journal. According to a statement, Evans thinks that G&G “is the most exciting magazine to come along in years.” min magazine and Dr. Samir Husni (“Mr. Magazine”) agree, as G&G has been named one of the 15 Hottest Launches of 2007. (Come to our awards luncheon at Tavern on the Green to find out where G&G is indeed the Hottest Launch of 2007.) Late this afternoon (October 24), in a memo to his staff, F&S group publisher Eric Zinczenko wrote: "While this is unfortunate news for us, I am personally very happy for Sid, his wife Susan and their two children, Austin and Phoebe.... With this news, the search for Field & Stream’s next editor begins.... The goal will be to find a replacement with many of the qualities that made Sid so successful here to keep our momentum moving forward. This is a search I will not take lightly. Sid will stay on for the next few weeks to oversee the close of the February 2008 issue. This will allow time for me to begin the comprehensive search this position deserves and to help us in the transition. " From Steve Cohn: Quite a coup for April 2007 Garden & Gun founder Rebecca Darwin, the past The New Yorker/Woman/Mirabella publisher and Fortune marketing director who returned to her South Carolina roots and named the magazine after a bar in Charleston. "I know I wanted Sid here from the start, and it happened," she says. "Having grown up in Memphis, he knows the South, and he is clearly expert in hunting, fishing, and the outdoors--which is everything that we are about. Sid is a brilliant editor, and I'm delighted." With 30,000 paid circulation (150,000 distribution) at this point, the soon-to-be bimonthly Garden & Gun is minuscule next to the 1.5 million circ monthly Field & Stream. But in recruiting Evans (start date to be determined), Darwin quickly scored a big-league bullseye.
