Patrick and Reilly: a blockbuster trade

About a minute after Time’s Sports Illustrated snagged the free agent Dan Patrick from waivers, all-star back-page anchor Rick Reilly jumped ship for ESPN. As far as we can tell, this was first reported by sports blog, thebiglead.com, then confirmed the following day in The New York Times.

According to min, as of Thursday of last week, there was enough elbow room at the iconic sports mag for two stud content producers.

Sports enthusiasts had this to say on what felt eerily like a blockbuster NBA trade at thebiglead:

“Another reason to not watch ESPN.”

“Good God. Anyone remember the old CnnSi Tv channel? Rick Reilly was the original Columnist That Does Not Translate To TV guy. Smug he is. Talented he used to be.”

“This is a head-scratcher to me. SI has the biggest circulation of any sports mag out there, and Reilly has carved himself a deep niche on the back page. I find it hard to believe that he’ll find as much success after making the transition to television.”

“ESPN gets Rick. SI gets Dan Patrick. Advatage: SI.”

Steve Cohn, the number one pro-sumer, had this to say:

"Reilly continues a nine-year tradition of SI staffers going to ESPN. This began with John Papanek, a past managing editor of SI in the early 90s, who was ESPN the Magazine’s first editor in March 1998—he’s now editor-at-large—whereas Patrick is just about the first notable to migrate from ESPN to SI."
