Dan Patrick, the iconic Sports Center anchor, who, along with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, was the face of the show in the 90’s, left ESPN in August. Today, it was announced by Sports Illustrated, ESPN’s chief rival, that Patrick will be joining the top Time, Inc. brand as a senior writer for SI and for SI.com. As part of the deal, SI will produce and host Patrick’s Web site, DanPatrick.com.

Highlights of this partnership include:
- A weekly column for SI
- The relaunch of DanPatrick.com in early 2008, with simulcast from Patrick’s radio show
- A Dan Patrick blog and social networking community
- SI writers will be on the Dan Patrick radio show regularly
- Patrick will be emcee at the SI Sportsman of the Year celebration

More to come as this story unfolds.

From Steve Cohn:

Patrick becomes the first major ESPN personality to join SI. On the other hand, ESPN The Magazine was built by many SI alumni, led by founding editor (March 1998) John Papanek, who was SI managing editor in the early 1990s. (Papanek is now espn.com senior VP/editor-in-chief.) Also, Patrick's planned SI column will be front-of-the-book and not conflict with Rick Reilly's back-page Life of Reilly.
