'Sports Illustrated' Gives Jeremy Lin a Rare 'Double'

Friday, February 24, 2012

In basketball terminology, a double-double means scoring 10+ points and getting either 10+ rebounds or dishing out 10+ assists in a game. Far easier than Lin's back-to-back cover achievement (February 20/27, 2012) in SI. That has happened only 12 times in SI's 57½-year-history, and in most occasions it was less on the athlete and more on the team (such as Dirk Nowitzki getting the most recent "double" on the June 13/20 2011 SI covers for leading the Dallas Mavericks to the National Basketball Association championship).

But Lin's rise from an unknown Harvard graduate to New York Knicks superstar in less than a month has endeared him around the world. Especially China, where Lin's parents were born, and SI president (since December 2010) Mark Ford and group editor (since February 2002) Terry McDonell obviously paid heed to the potential marketing bonanza in the 1.3 billion population country. (So, too, did Time managing editor Rick Stengel, but as the New York Post reported on February 18, the February 27 Time Lin cover appeared in the Chinese/Taiwan editions but not in the U.S.)
Lin also made history by being the first New York-based athlete to get the SI double. He surpasses everybody from Mickey Mantle through Eli Manning (2009 Sportsman of the Year Derek Jeter, too), which is quite an achievement.
