BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Playboy Is Moving Its Editorial Headquarters From Chicago to Los AngelesWednesday, December 14, 2011 It was announced late yesterday (Dec. 13) that Playboy--which has been a fixture in Chicago since Hugh Hefner launched the magazine in Dec. 1953--will relocate its editorial, art and photography departments to Los Angeles (Beverly Hills) in May 2012.The news was not a surprise, because Playboy chief content officer (since Jan. 2009) Jimmy Jellinek made the move in August 2011 in order to be closer to Hefner (whose mansion is in Holmby Hills), Playboy Enterprises CEO (since July 2009) Scott Flanders and the magazine's tv/video businesses. In turn, Flanders had begun to sublease some of Playboy's Chicago office space at 680 North Lake Shore Drive, where the lease does not expire until 2022. It is not yet known how many Playboy employees will be affected and who will choose to relocate. The company has leased office space at the Tishman Speyer-owned Office at Beverly Hills (9336 and 9346 Civic Center Drive) for all of its Los Angeles operations. Playboy's advertising offices remain New York-based, as the magazine's business side has been managed by American Media Inc. since Nov. 2009. Publisher (since Jan. 2010) is John Lumpkin. From 2002-2009, the editorial headquarters were in New York before returning to Chicago under Jellinek. Corporate, under Hugh and Christie Hefner, had always been in Chicago before Flanders' hire.
