American Photo Lauds Photogs of 9/11 in iPad App
Monday, September 12, 2011

As American pored through slideshows and image montages yesterday in memory of the fateful day in 2001, American Photo magazine wants us all to recall that cadres of professional photographers also ran with the heroes of the day to capture all of those moments. In a new free iPad app, the magazine in partnership with Mag + lunched a commemorative app that focuses on the photojournalists who also ran towards the disaster.

“The Photographers’ Stories” prints many previously unpublished shots along with a narrative that follows the unfolding events through the perspective of dozens of photographers who recount their experiences recording the event. The app is arranged in classic Mag + fashion, making use of long vertical scrolls and multiple columns. Each image one encounters in the scroll can be double-tapped to go full screen.

Also embedded in the app are select audio recollections tied to specific images. The narrations are compelling, of course, but alas the functionality of the audio buttons are rough. We found ourselves too often tapping with no result on these icons.

And of course the stores are the driving force in this narrative, which is more text than image in the end. Some photographers were dangerously close to the action and had to be saved by the very firefighters they were recording. The last half of the app is composed of longer version narratives by the individual photographers and their larger portfolios of relevant pictures.

The editors have made an unexpected but powerful point of celebrating photographers more through their verbal recollections than through piles of photos. In one sense the structure underscores the power of the one poignant image in an age of visual overkill. Rather than assault us with the usual digital slideshow banquet, American Photo focuses on story and lets the image do what it has always done best in magazines - punctuate, dramatize, complement.

Also see the commemorative magazines for 9/11 ten years later.
