Judith Miller Joins Newsmax
Thursday, December 30, 2010
One of the most controversial journalistic figures during the Iraq War, Judith Miller, is now writing for conservative newsmagazine and site Newsmax. The former correspondent for The Progressive, NPR and The New York Times will be a contributing writer for Newsmax starting with the January 2011 issue.
Her first article is “Terrorism, Money and Drugs,” which chronicles the ongoing U.S. effort to curtail the drug economy in Iraq that is underwriting terrorism. Miller won a Pulitzer Prize while at the Times for explanatory reporting.
Miller most famously wrote a series of articles on the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq during the run-up to the U.S. invasion. Critics of her work claimed these articles were not sufficiently skeptical of Bush Administration claims that Saddam Hussein represented an immediate threat to the U.S. and Iraq’s neighbors.
She became an emblem of journalistic principle in 2005 during court cases involving the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity. Miller refused to disclose the source who informed her of Plame's role at the CIA, and she was jailed on contempt of court charges for 85 days. After being released from prison, Miller resigned from her Times post and said she would help enact federal journalist shield laws that would protect the press from disclosing confidential sources.
