Michael Carroll Named Budget Travel Publisher
Wednesday, October 13, 2010
Michael Carroll, with a travel background that includes 15 years at Air France before building the category at Harvard Business Review, is the new publisher of the 675,000 rate-base Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel. "We're excited to have Michael on board," says BT president (since August 2008) Nancy Telliho. "He gives a rare client and media perspective on travel, and he will make a huge contribution." Most recently, Carroll was the Wall Street Journal's director of travel and tourism advertising sales.
Carroll succeeds Bernadette Haley, who was Budget Travel publisher for nearly two years before resigning in mid-August. "Bernadette was very hard-working, but she arrived at a very tough time—September 2008—as advertising was collapsing," says Telliho. "That made conditions very difficult for her. I was luckier. I joined Budget Travel in 2000 [as publisher] and I saw the good times. Bernadette never had the opportunity, and the decision for her to leave was mutual." Haley is the past publisher of Reader's Digest, Working Mother and Hearst Magazines' weekly Quick and Simple, which shut down in July 2008.
BT was launched in 1997 by travel journalist Arthur Frommer and the late Don Welsh. Washington Post Co., through Newsweek, acquired it in January 2000 (when Telliho joined). Newsweek's worsening financials led to BT's sale to current owner Fletcher Asset Management in December 2008.
