Atlantic iPad Issue Targets Sharing and Reading
Thursday, September 9, 2010

Many iPad magazines aim to dazzle viewers with spinning, twirling 3D models and flying menus or nav schemes. But some brands really need to lead more with the text-driven values at the heart of their identity.

Fresh off of its highly successful relaunch as a magazine of new ideas, The Atlantic comes onto the iPad this month focusing on its core mission. This tablet-ized edition is all about reading…and sharing.

The app reproduces the current issue but also adds select video clips from the increasingly deep trove of digital clips the brand is amassing. A Christopher Hitchens essay on anti-Semitism is extended by a recorded interview with Hitchens and novelist Martin Amis. A pop-up page view bar gives the reader thumbnail access to any page. A Quick Links tab allows quick jumps to the magazine’s main sections as well.

Two interesting innovations grabbed our attention. On the advertising side, Atlantic activates every print ad as an interactive opportunity by flipping the page to reveal the sponsor’s Web landing page. Also refreshing is the way the magazine organizes its sharing tools as a single pane that lets the reader send any of the major editorial pieces in the magazine to others via email or by Facebook, Twitter or Yahoo Buzz recommendations.

While a good freshman effort at converting a text-heavy magazine to the iPad, Atlantic still needs to work on some basics. The zooming feature is not accurate or helpful enough to make reading lengthy articles as easy as it should be. A dedicated text mode might be more helpful. Also, the app is sluggish; pages do not snap to the screen as you flip through the contents.

Atlantic publisher Jay Lauf tells minonline that this initial offering is only the first of a two-part iPad approach. Later this year we will see an app that departs from the magazine format and integrates dynamically updated content from the brand’s Web site.

Will have to take a look at that magazine, i've got a few on my iPad already.. it's just way too easy to add more.. It's great how the digital versions of these magazines allow you to interact more with the articles, like external URLS etc, but I guess from an advertisers point of view you can have interactive ads. Big bucks!
I found this website: http://www.finddigitalmagazines.co.uk to have a good selection, and you can download the ipad app from there too.

Thanks,
Chris
