iPad the Third Most Popular WiFi Mobile Device mobile device for connecting to the Internet over WiFi hotspots. According to a new survey of public WiFi user habits by JiWire, nearly 5% of all devices connecting to a wireless hub is now an iPad. While laptops remain the most-used WiFi device, mobile handsets and now the tablets are growing their share quickly. The iPhone remains the most popular WiFi device, but it is losing market share to the HTC Droid Incredible, which is now the most popular Android-powered device. In the most recent quarter, Android devices increased their share of WiFi use 1.2% and RIM devices rose .07% as Apple’s iOS fell 2.3%JiWire also found that wireless users prefer apps and sites that help them find local products and services. Two-thirds of the top 15 location-based apps are aimed at finding services. The study also finds that 50% of respondents were interested in getting location-based information about nearby stores and wanted to receive location-specific advertising. The most popular location based services are GPS/maps, discounts and coupons and reviews. JiWire used data from 315,000 public WiFi locations and a survey of 2,260 customers.
