iPad, Tablet Projections Escalate
Friday, April 16, 2010

With current estimates of 600,000 Apple iPads already sold in two weeks, and demand high enough to delay a European launch, analysts are falling all over themselves this week to raise expectations for the tablet platforms. In-Stat is now projecting that 46 million tablet-sized portable media devices could be in market worldwide by 2014. “But if successful, the 100 million mark could be broached during the latter half of the decade,” they say in a research brief yesterday.

Outsell director and lead analyst Ned May said in another brief that lingering doubts about the viability of the iPad were addressed by Apple’s announcement of an operating system upgrade that will bring multitasking and enterprise-level security to the platform this fall. “This will open up the market for iPads to a broad range of uses, and any publisher developing a digital edition for the iPad is advised to start focusing on 4.0 today,” he writes. “Forget what was possible yesterday.”

And print media research firm MRI had its own good news for magazines contemplating tablet/e-reader extensions. In a new study they found that 91% of e-reader owners are also magazine readers. These users are also more likely than most to regard magazine reading as positive experiences for relaxation and thinking. According to Anne Marie Kelly, MRI’s svp marketing & strategic planning, "MRI's data certainly show e-reader owners are fans of magazines--a good indication for the potential of these devices to become strong magazine platforms once they are broadly adopted by the marketplace."

Largely because of the market penetration many analysts expect for tablet devices in the coming years, research firm mediaIDEAS now estimates that the share of magazine industry revenue coming from digital sources will climb from 10% in 2009 to 58% in 2020. Print revenues, now at about 75% of income, will fall to less than a third of the industry’s revenue sources over the next decade.

On May 20, min will host a Webinar “E-Readers and Tablets: Position Your Magazine Brand for Profit” that will include presentations from mediaIDEAS, Bonnier and Conde Nast.
