Two Digital 'Ellies' for New York Mag, National Geographic

The American Society of Magazine Editors' inaugural digital National Magazine Awards on March 18 were indicative of online's growth and importance vis-à-vis traditional print, but there was still some of that déjà vu all over again feeling often seen at the print Ellies (named for the late Alexander Calder's Elephant stabile), where New York magazine and National Geographic have been—with The New Yorker—among the most dominant titles in recent years.

One of newyorkmag.com's digital Ellies was for online general excellence, which it won in 2009, when there was the single awards event, and nationalgeographic.com's photography/digital media recognition follows nine related awards (photography and photojournalism) on the print side.

Newyorkmag.com was also awarded the multimedia feature/package Ellie for its online coverage of New York Fashion Week (February and September) and nationalgeographic.com won for "community" (use of social media). Both categories were among the 10 out the 12 presented at the digital awards that were new. (See a list of all the winners.)

The print National Magazine Awards will be presented on April 22 (see finalists).
