BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Oracle, Angie and eWeek Lead Digital Magazine Publishing As has been the case in recent years, Oracle magazine distributes the most copies via digital means – 187,897 or 36.4% of total circulation. Angie’s List came in second with 177,909 (or 37.4% of circ.) and eWeek distributed 75,000 copies digitally (18.7%). Among the top ten titles in the digital circulation list, the Journal of American Water Works Association had the highest share of circ coming through digital channels (74.2%). Among larger books, Computer Weekly and eSchool News now have almost half of their circulation coming through digital. After a decade of slow penetration into a skeptical market, digital magazine platforms have enjoyed a second look from publishers as new portable e-readers and upcoming tablet computing devices seem to give the format a more suitable platform. Many of the interactive elements and navigational elements that will be needed to translate printed matter to e-reader formats either apply or echo technologies that digital magazine companies have been developing over the last decade. Companies in the space like Texterity and Zinio are developing cross-media platforms that will help publishers bring digitized versions of their issues to e-readers, tablets and smart phones more seamlessly.
