Sony Reader Puts Magazines on Its Newsstand
Thursday, March 11, 2010

Magazines and newspapers will play a more prominent role in the Sony Reader store moving forward. Sony announced today that it has expanded the number of periodicals available to Sony Reader owners for immediate download to their wireless devices. Among the magazine titles now in the store or coming soon: National Review, PC Magazine, Reason, Foreign Affairs, Popular Science Special Editions, The American Scholar and The New York Review of Books. The magazine titles join scores of national and regional newspapers now available as well in the Reader Store.

The periodical content in the Reader Store is being pitched for the Sony Daily Edition model, which has a larger seven-inch screen and 3G wireless connectivity. Sony’s model differentiates itself from the Kindle and Nook with a stylus and touchscreen that allow users to make notes and highlights on the screen and navigate pages with finger swipes.

Currently, the Sony Reader Store lists PC Magazine as its bestselling magazine, followed by Foreign Affairs and National Review. As of this morning, the store lists only five magazine titles available, however. Amazon’s magazine catalog, which includes New Yorker, Time, and The Economist, has swelled to well over 40 titles. Most of the titles in the Sony store are priced between $1.25 and $2.50 per issue.

While Sony’s Reader seems to run a distant fourth in the PR wars among Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple, the device itself may have a larger retail presence than any other portable reader. It has been on sale at Borders and major electronics stores for a number of months and is among the only e-Readers to come in a range of price-points with variable feature sets. Still, no manufacturers are releasing hard sales numbers for their reader devices.
