BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
David Brown Remembered it was David's encouraging Helen to write Sex and the Single Girl in 1962 that led to her becoming Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief in 1965. Helen, of course, turned Cosmo and the women's magazine industry around over the next 32 years with a frankness about love, sex and relationships never seen before. David chipped in with his "hobbies" of writing cover lines and a monthly column while becoming an influential force in Hollywood.Yet, David had Cosmo "seniority" over Helen in his being the Hearst magazine's managing editor from 1949 to 1952. Per his Wall Street Journal obituary (Feb. 3), Brown quipped that his work was "so brilliant that [Cosmo] dipped to its lowest circulation in its history." During Helen's reign, Cosmo circulation rose to 3 million—2 million on the newsstand—which continues today under current editor-in-chief (since July 1998) Kate White. Helen, who is now Cosmo International editor-in-chief, survives him. If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com |
